Numerical modelling has become the indispensable and powerful tool for design and safety assessment of dams. The tremendous development of computer hardware and software over the last decades has made it possible the present extraordinary development of computer-based methods.
The benchmark-workshops organized by the ICOLD Technical Committee A “Computational Aspects of Analysis and Design of Dams” since 1991 provide an excellent opportunity for engineers, researchers and operators to present and exchange their experiences and the latest developments related to the design, performance and monitoring of dams.
The ICOLD Technical Committee A and ITCOLD, the Italian National Committee on Large Dams, have the pleasure to announce the organization of the 15th Benchmark Workshop on Numerical Analysis of Dams to be held in Milano on 9th-11th September 2019.
The Workshop is co-organized with the Politecnico di Milano, that will host the event, and Ricerca sul Sistema Energetico - RSE.
Moreover, after the Workshop a short course on Modern Methods for Nonlinear Earthquake Response History Analysis of Concrete Dams will be given by Professor Anil K. Chopra (University of California, Berkeley) in collaboration with his research associates.

Welcome to the 88thAnnual Meeting of International Commission on Large Dams
New Delhi, 4-10th April 2020
The INCOLD is proud to host the 88th Annual Meeting of the International Commission on Large Dams in India’s capital city, New Delhi. INCOLD has a long tradition of collaboration with other National Committees of ICOLD and participation in the development of large Dams as well as leading guidance for engineers and other professionals.
All the engineers and other professionals contribute their expertise to develop large dams for irrigation and other multipurpose uses along with power generation with eco-friendly measures. India is 3rd in terms of number of large dams after USA and China. In terms of irrigation India ranks 2nd worldwide having largest irrigated land area. The ground system is the largest, covering – 160 million ha of cultivated land in India with 39 million ha irrigated by ground water, 22 million ha by irrigated canals. About two third of cultivation in India is still depending on monsoon. India is the 7th largest producer of hydroelectric power in the world. As on 31.12.2018, India’s installed utility-scale hydroelectric capacity is 45,399 MW or 13.10 % of its total utility power generation capacity.
India’s state- of- art technology being illustrated by constructing large dams like Bhakra, Tehri, Sardarsorvar and many more mega projects.
The Participation in ICOLD 2020 shall encourage the Indian experts as well as global experts from Dam industry to share their experiences among similar community. This event will provide an excellent opportunity to know recent trends in Dam industry.

to the 8th International Symposium on RCC Dams
Nov.11th-12th, Kunming China
Chinese National Committee on Large Dams (CHINCOLD) and Spanish National Committee on Large Dams (SPANCOLD) have the honor to invite professionals to the 8th International Symposium on Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC) Dams, which will be held on Nov. 11th-12th, 2019 in Kunming City, China, together with the CHINCOLD 2019 Annual Meeting.
RCC dams have the virtues of saving a great deal of concrete, building quickly, making project cost down and early bringing into playing project advantages and so on. Hence, the technique of constructing dams has been quickly spread and applied since it came out. Today there are more than 400 RCC dams in more than 40 countries. Great successful experiences and advanced technologies have been achieved. CHINCOLD and SPANCOLD have devoted to promote the technology from early 1990’s. The first Symposium on RCC dams was jointly organized by the two committees in 1991 in Beijing China, which was a success start of the series of RCC Symposiums.
Following those successful and fruitful Symposiums held in Beijing (China) in 1991, Santander (Spain) in 1995, Chengdu (China) in 1999, Madrid (Spain) in 2003, Zaragoza (Spain) in 2012 and Chengdu (China) in 2015, the coming one jointly organized by CHINCOLD and SPANCOLD, will continue to contribute significantly to the knowledge and application of RCC technology with a wide range of contents and international scope. The Symposium will serve as a perfect venue for practitioners, engineers, researchers, scientists, managers and decision makers from all over the world to exchange ideas and technology about the latest developments dealing with RCC dams.
Beside international best practice, the participants will also have the occasion to visit some famous RCC dams in China in operation or under construction, such as Huangdeng RCC Gravity Dam (H=203m), Jin’anqiao RCC Gravity Dam (H=160m), Dachaoshan RCC Gravity Dam (H=115m), Dahuaqiao RCC Gravity Dam (H=107m) and etc. Also a technical exhibition for enterprises related to hydropower and dams will be held during the Symposium.

Dam Failure in Laos
The International Commission on Large Dams (ICOLD) is following the situation very closely as information is just coming out about the collapse of the saddle dam at the Xe Pian Xe Namnoy Hydroelectric Dam, in Laos.
ICOLD newly elected President Michael Rogers made the following statement:
“Our deepest condolences go out to the people of Laos impacted by this tragedy, especially those families who have lost loved ones and/or their homes.
Dams are critical pieces of not only physical, but also socio-economic infrastructure that supply renewable power, storage for agricultural, industrial, municipal and community water supply. Like other large infrastructure in our societies, dams provide critical service, but also pose high risks that must be addressed during the planning, design and construction phases. The precautionary principle of dams to prevent and/or mitigate adverse downstream safety consequences informs and is at the heart of the ICOLD Mission.
ICOLD has been working for 90 years to promote the safe and sustainable design and construction of dams. As an organization of 100 nations committed to the safety of all dams around the world, ICOLD stands ready to assist and support the project owner and the national dam safety organization in Laos to assess the situation and work towards recovery. Moving forward, it will be important to understand the full cause of this apparent failure so that important lessons may be shared with other nations and dam owners. This is the heart of ICOLD mission and the main reason why it was founded. For example, during its recent Congress in Vienna (July 1-7 2018), ICOLD organized an important open workshop on the lessons learned from the Oroville Spillway Incident (USA, 2017).
Again, our heartfelt condolences go out to the thousands of persons downstream of this dam that have been impacted by this tragedy and ICOLD stands ready to support Laos in any way possible.”
